The world is enormous and… problems are lurking all over. Indeed as part of life vision problems are lurking all around. Our vision is most valuable as good vision is health and helps us for higher quality of life. Our eyes, as vison sensory organ, have an extremely complex structure and a delicate, easily exposed nature. Due to their fragility, unfortunately, our eyes could be affected by numerous diseases from infancy to late old age.<\/p>\n

What is the most common cause of impaired vision and blindness?<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

It is interesting, and certainly useful, to know what is worldwide the most common cause of impaired vision and blindness. Based on a systematic review of medical studies in different countries and continents, we can sum up information about the leading illness amid the most common causes of blindness or severe visual impairment worldwide. The top five causes in our region, i.e. Central and Eastern Europe, include:<\/p>\n

  1. Cataract \u2013<\/strong> the clouding in the eye lens is one of the most common causes of vision impairment, responsible for about 16 million people affected worldwide.<\/li>\n
  2. Age-related macular degeneration \u2013<\/strong> the damage to the retina central part counts among main causes for severe and irreversible vision loss in developed countries.<\/li>\n
  3. Glaucoma \u2013<\/strong> a common eye condition where the optic nerve connecting the eye with the brain is damaged. It develops slowly over many years and affects peripheral vision first.<\/li>\n
  4. Existing refractive error \u2013<\/strong> need for diopters that could have been corrected with glasses, but was not. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia are the four most common refractive errors.<\/li>\n
  5. Diabetic retinopathy –<\/strong> a complication of diabetes affecting the eyes. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (the retina).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
